Evening sun sparkling in Walvis Bay with three flamingos looking for food in the shallow waters. There were thousands of flamingos at the bay, feeding and standing in the water with their stick-thin legs. We went there during our trip to Namibia and drove through the big sand dunes between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay to see the flamingos.

Sunset Saturday XXVIII
Another beautiful sunset at the beach in Cape Town during my first visit there in July last year. It was quite windy and the sky had been full of clouds earlier, but in the evening it cleared and so we got a great view of the sunset.Enjoy the weekend!

a warm place to be
I was lucky and got to see the beach again when I flew to Durban for a couple of days to attend some meetings. The temperature forecast shocked me with lows of -5°, but while I was there it was actually quite nice and warm. From my hotel room on the 19th floor I could see the harbour, and I even managed to get down to the beachfront for a little stroll.
I didn't have time to visit the Moses Mabhida stadium and go on top of the arch, and I also didn't manage to have a sundowner on the beach, but it was nice anyway to be in a city by the sea.
Maybe next time I will have some more time and get to do a few of the fun things Durban has to offer...

Sunset Saturday XXIII
The sunset during our last evening in Jambiani. It was low tide and so we were able to walk out quite a bit on the beach. Turning back, we caught the sunset behind the village with lots of people enjoying the evening atmosphere, women wading through the little pools of water and a bunch of children playing football on the beach. It was such a nice, calm atmosphere and a perfect ending to our holiday...05 August 2011
little italy
We spent some time on the East coast of Zanzibar, in a wind-swept place called Uroa. All the locals (and the "Massai") spoke Italian, as most of the tourists coming there are from Italy.
Our hotel was a nice little place, owned by an Italian (of course), who had trained the chef to serve Italian-inspired food such as Risotto, Spaghetti al Frutti di Mare and Prosciutto. It was delish!
The beach was nice, too, and we went for long walks, collecting shells and watching the water come and go.
But the best place was the hammock under the trees by the pool, where I spent hours just reading and taking some naps in between.

what really happened in Zanzibar
they flew to a magical island, where love was in the air.
infatuated by all the exotic spices, they decided that marriage isn't such a bad idea.
to the sound of the ocean, he asked the question and she didn't have to think long about the answer.15 Juli 2011
off to the beach
We're off to the beaches of Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean! The weather and temperature forecast looks great, and so do the pictures I have seen so far. I'm so looking forward to escaping the cold and leaving my alpaca sweater behind for a couple of days.

Sunset Saturday XVII
Sunset at the beach after a massive thunderstorm in Varadero. The rain was pouring down for an hour or so, accompanied by ferocious thunders and gusts of wind. In the hotel there were several leaks where water was dripping from the ceiling onto the floor. The dark clouds went out towards the ocean and the sun was setting under a dramatic sky, glowing red on the plain sea. I went down to the beach and watched until it got dark with a sundowner in hand. It's about time to go back to the beach and I can't wait for some warm days and beach time when we get to Zanzibar in about 2 weeks time!02 April 2011
Sunset Saturday V
A perfect, pastell-colored sunset in Phuket, Thailand with some beautiful cloud formations. I love the reflections of the sun on the water and the sand. We spent a quiet weekend there back in 2009 and while I didn't like the super-touristy town of Phuket, I loved the beach and the surf. It was still the rainy season, hence the clouds, but it was actually nice to view the rain come and go from our terrace.24 März 2011
stormy weather
When we arrived in Maputo the sky was grey with low-hanging clouds and a strong breeze was blowing along the beach. Nevertheless, we took a walk along the Costa del Sol and watched the fishermen going after their business.
The beach strip was littered with glass and bottle caps in the sand, but it was nice to get some fresh air after all these hours in the car.
And despite the wind, it was still kind of warm and humid,so we sat in the deckchairs at the Clube Naval for some strong coffee. It felt really good being at the seaside and smelling the salt in the air :)23 März 2011
Under the Sea
During our trip, we went swimming with dolphins off the coast of Punta do Ouro. We went out on a little boat, equipped with fins and masks, and found some bottlenose dolphins very close to the shore.
It was an incredible experience to swim with these beautiful, curious creatures and hear them communicating with each other in the sea. More (under water) pictures from our cruise are available here.05 März 2011
Sunset Saturday I
This picture was taken more than two years ago on our first trip in February 2009 to Rawa Island just across the border from Singapore. We spent a dreamy weekend there, walking around the island, listening to the gentle breeze in the palm trees and watching the little fish in the cristal clear water. The sunset wasn't spectacular because of all the clouds in the sky, but the atmosphere was relaxed and exactly what we wanted for a weekend get-away.22 Februar 2011
trip planning
I really want to go to the beach and so we decided it's time for another trip!In March, we are planning to go for a week-long holiday to Mozambique and the Elephant Coast, where they say there are pretty beaches, fresh seafood and green landscapes....I'll find out if they are right and report back. But until then, there is some more work to be done...

Ein Tag am Meer
In Chintza, a well-loved holiday resort on the Wild Coast, we found a perfect place to rest after spending so many hours on the road. Situated on a hill overlooking a bay we spent two nights at Buccaneer's from where you would wake up in the morning to a beautiful sunrise and the sound of the waves down at the beach.
On our beach walk we collected some seashells, observed little snails walking across the sand, listened to the endless crashing of the waves and had picnic on the beach before we returned to the lodge and enjoyed a delicious home-cooked dinner and some live-music.
Life is good at the Wild Coast and this was exactly what we needed in order to prepare for the rest of our journey.

who wants to go to the seaside

during semana santa I got to spend a few days on the beach!
the lago nicaragua is a huge lake with a volcanic island in the middle, where life is quiet and seems to be uneventful, making it a perfect get-away.

the scenery is very beautiful and I enjoyed a couple of relaxed days in great company before I went to the pacific ocean for more intakes of sunshine, sand, surf and salty water....

"you smell of Baliness"
this is what the cab driver in Singapore told us on the way back to the city
I guess he was right...

maybe because we inhaled every single moment during our stay on this lovely island so deeply
maybe because we spent hours in the water, by the beach and under the sun
maybe because of the incense burnt in the many many temples
maybe because we came so close to the volcano
maybe because of the flowers in and around our room
maybe because of the mix of all these different aromas

all of this makes the place so unique
and the island really has its own scent

it makes you wanna stay
and we promised to come back again
for more Baliness
