veggies & bread

When we got back to Gabs, I found a flyer for a "vegbox" at our gate. We decided to try it and got our first weekly delivery of fresh, locally grown, vegetables, salad and fruits. Now our fridge is full of healthy, green stuff and so far, we've not become tired of the veggies. Also, given the lack of proper bread, we have started to bake our own bread. Björn has mastered the art of baking bread with all sorts of flour and grains, and I made some baguette the other night from a recipe I got from my mother. We ate it fresh out of the oven with salad from our "vegbox" and it was sooo good that it was almost gone by the time I remembered to take a picture ;)
Anyone in Gabs interested in getting a vegbox, contact Karin at 76637577 or email thevegbox@home.co.bw

sour happy jam

It's citrus season here and all over town you can see lemon and orange trees full of fruits in the garden. We got a huge bunch of lemons from a friend and were contemplating what to do with them. Turns out, for a lemon cake you only need two - not enough to kill the lemons sitting on our kitchen table. So we got down to work and made lemon marmalade with some mint leaves from our garden and some vodka for the taste.
Now we have enough for the rest of our lives (I don't really like lemon marmalade), but it was quite entertaining to make it. Anyone in Gabs fancy a glass, let me know ;)

Dinner with Friends (and Jamie)

Last night, we invited some friends over and finally tried some of the recipes from Jamie's 30 minute meals (something we have been wanting to do for a looong time). After a power cut that almost ruined our evening plans, we started cooking and even though it took us slightly longer than 30 minutes, our guests said it was totally worth the wait :)
Thanks everyone for joining us and for the nice evening!

Comfort Food

My mother brought us some "Milchreis" from Germany and with the evenings getting colder and colder over here, it was time for some comfort food. And so we heated up some milk and sugar, added the rice and stirred diligently for about 30 minutes. Served with some fruits and cinnamon it was a delicious dinner!

a day with flowers, letters & cupcakes

I wanted flowers in the house, so I picked some from the roadside on my way home.

The afternoon I spent with the children at Happy Home and they wrote colorful answers to their pen pals. Their letters are really sweet and they even try to teach them some words in Setswana!

The day ended with cupcakes and a little bit of home - podcasts are king!

food memories: alfajores

One year ago I was travelling through Patagonia and living on avocado & cheese sandwiches, pasta and alfajores for days. For some reason I just remembered those alfajores and wish I could eat some, but no way you can find them here. So after some research and getting soaked in the rain (also something that happened more than once in Patagonia), I decided to give it a try and bake some myself. Turns out, the quasi 'dulce de leche' I found is better than expected and coconut can replace chocolate cover :)

in the kitchen

Ever since I made it to my parents' place I've been busy baking (and eating) X-mas biscuits. Outside it is freezing and it has been snowing for the past days, but in our kitchen it is warm and cosy, and this is where I am spending a lot of time these days, watching the snow fall and enjoying a hot cup of tea. It's good to be home for Christmas!
